Sunday 22nd - More sardanes

No work today! At least not on the apartment, but I did a little paid work. We were going to go to the beach, but the wind was already very blustery in the morning, so decided to put it off until another day. There was some casual sardanes dancing in Place des Neuf Jets. This time mostly done by older locals, and it was surprisingly good to watch. It is a very dainty quiet dance, not complex but at the same time with enough variation to lift it a little. I still can’t get my head around grown men in little dance shoes doing delicate steps on tip-toes!

Place des Neuf Jets

A nice quiet day with plenty of reading. This evening was the final blast of the sardanes festival with a concert in the square below. We had a superb grandstand view, and all for free, while the square had been cut off with barriers for the paying concert-goers. We invited Ross & Liz around to share the view. The music was a step up on the local bands, a little more varied, and well-played. It consists of a range of brass, a double-bass, a penny-whistle flute and a couple of shawm-like instruments (like bagpipe chanters) with quite a harsh piping note that takes a bit of getting used to. Finally a group of kettle drums joined in, then the stage was cleared for some good dancers.

Concert, Place de l'Eglise

We enjoyed a few drinks and a good talk, then turned to three games of 500 until the wee small hours. Liz plays bridge, but I don’t think we are up to that – I can’t even remember the rules.
