We headed off to the beach on the scooter at 10am on a
lovely morning. Clear and more or less calm. At the first major roundabout
there were groups of police and huge queues in the southbound lanes. We had no idea
why, but by the time we had got to Le Racou (the beach) we had seen a pair of
Canadair water-bombers flying multiple missions, and had seen an “all access to
Spain closed” signs, so presumed there were fires over the border.

The beach was very pleasant, though much less crowded than
we imagined, this being in the middle of the French holidays. Had a nice lie in
the sun, but balked at swimming as it looked a little cool as a bit choppy.
Also there was the risk of being scooped up and dropped in Spain if we’d gone
out too far. By the time we headed back, the roads must have reopened, and we
could also see huge smoke clouds over the border. We had to leave the windows
closed overnight as Céret was hazy with smoke. The French seem to have their
side of the border under control.
