Sunday 1 July - Up to Prats with Alastair & Sally

A slowish start to the morning but away at 10am for a trip up our valley. Unfortunately the day was overcast and, for the first time in a few weeks, it started to rain. Darn. There went the picnic lunch. We persevered anyway and drove all the way to Prats-de-Mollo, where we had taken Suzy, Tim and family a few weeks earlier. Raincoats on and umbrellas up, and we walked up to the church and then through the covered tunnel to the fort above. It was still a neat place to visit, and the star-shaped fort design by Vauban is intriguing. It was the first time Alastair had seen a star-shaped Vauban fort so close.

By the time we got back to the car at 1.30pm it was pretty cold (yes, really – it went below 20 and we were all frozen) and the rain heavy so we unanimously voted to keep the picnic in the boot and have it when we got home. The thick creamy pastries we had bought before leaving Céret were devoured and managed to stave off our hunger quite well.

Freezing at home at 24°

Home to our picnic, watching some of the Tour de France on TV and Alastair working on his application.

Out to dinner tonight at what is becoming our ‘regular’, La Fontaine in Place des Neuf Jets. A very nice meal but slightly bolted down before we dashed to Bar Pablo to catch the Spain vs Italy European Cup Final. Alastair had watched one of the semi-finals in Munich of Germany vs Spain and was keen to repeat the experience of a riotous Cup atmosphere in a bar. Unfortunately, rugby rather than football is the sport of choice in southern France, and there were only a few dozen people sitting outside Bar Pablo (the rain had stopped) and most weren’t even watching the match. We gave it away at halftime, with Spain 1-0 ahead. Tried Café de France but not much different there so, much to Alastair’s despair, returned home to watch the remainder on our own TV. The match was a good one however, and with Spain winning 4-0, was a great result. Alastair then head-down-bum-up again working until 1:30am.
