Another market day, and even more busy. We wonder how full
it must get in holiday season – you may not be able to move. We bought olives
from the same vendor, various veges, and this time found a couple of vendors of
English-language paperbacks, so trebled our meagre library. Red Cross had a
clothes stall so Karen managed to find some €1
trousers, shirts and shoes for painting. Once again the jazz band was in
residence outside Bar Pablo, where we spent a pleasant ¾ hour with a coffee and
apple tarts, listening to the jazz. We had the laptop and Alastair happened to
be online so we messaged him on Skype, the square being too noisy for voice,
though he could see and hear the jazz in the background. He didn’t look very
cheery; Munich has been a bit gloomy by the sound of it. Our weather too has
been continuing cold, but mostly sunny, with fresh snow on Canigó (the
mountain previously known as Canigou but the council has a campaign to have it
known by its Catalan name).

Our plan today was to go up the road to Le Boulou by the €1 bus to see what was
there and in particular to check out the big E. LeClerc store, where we hoped
to buy some monster salt and pepper mills that we had not been prepared to carry around
for the rest of the trip in 2009. I had tweaked my back this morning bending
down to pick up the camera, so it wasn’t a totally comfortable journey, but we
did manage to get a few more things we hadn’t found elsewhere., though not the
S&P mills.
We are still pinching ourselves over our choice of town and
our apartment location. We don’t feel it could have been any better. The
location on the square gives us a nice open sunny outlook rather than across an
alley onto another building, and there’s always something going on. The town
too seems to be lovely and busy, and the market is excellent. We’re surprised
about the number of English people here (though maybe a lot come in from other
places for market day), but the flavour of the town is clearly still very
French, which is what we were after. We are finding the lack of our own
transport a bit of a bind though, and will see about getting a scooter and/or a
bike for Karen, and some scooter storage, asap.
